Getting around

Locally-owned Kauai car rentals.

A locally-curated rundown of who to rent from, why Kauai sells out, and the dirt-road rule that decides whether you can reach Polihale.

Heads up: dirt-road restrictions

Most major rental companies (Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, etc.) prohibit driving on unpaved roads. That rule quietly blocks access to Polihale State Park — the last few miles in are dirt and potholes. If you violate the policy and something happens, you may be on the hook for the full cost of damages and recovery.

Before you book, ask the rental company directly: "Does your contract allow driving on unpaved roads to Polihale?" Local outfits and camper-van companies are usually the most flexible. When in doubt, get the answer in writing.

Book 3–4 months out

Kauai has a chronic rental shortage — there are simply not enough cars on the island during peak season (Dec–Apr, Jun–Aug). Reserve as soon as your flights are booked. Most providers allow free cancellation, so you can re-book if prices drop.

  • Compare local outfits against the big chains — locals often win on price and pickup.
  • LIH is small. Curbside pickup is faster than the rental-car shuttle loop.
  • If you plan to camp or chase sunrise/sunset spots, consider a camper van.
