Kauai vacation rentals fill 6–12 months ahead for peak season (Dec–Apr, Jun–Aug). If you already have a place booked, you're set. Still looking? Our Local Rentals page highlights direct-booking options with local owners and small managers — often with fewer fees and more money staying on island.

Kauai has a chronic rental shortage. Book now — most allow free cancellation, so re-book if prices drop. Local outfits often beat the big chains and will pick you up curbside at LIH. Important: some rental companies restrict access to dirt roads, which blocks entry to places like Polihale State Park. Ask your provider about off-pavement restrictions before you book.

Arrange a fresh flower or kukui nut lei to be presented as you exit the terminal. Most providers need at least 48 hours notice — book now so it's waiting on arrival day.
Two of the most loved-back ways to spend a slow or rainy day on-island: walk (or adopt) a shelter dog from the Kauai Humane Society — Kauai has a real dog-overpopulation problem, and their Field Trip program lets visitors sign one out for a beach day or hike. Or schedule time with the Waipa Foundation on the North Shore for a community workday in the loʻi or a guided cultural & environmental tour of the ahupuaʻa.
Skip the post-flight grocery run. Several local services stock your fridge before you walk in.
Oxybenzone/octinoxate sunscreens are ILLEGAL in Hawaii. Bring zinc-oxide from home — cheaper than on-island.
